Sometimes the plan on paper is way better than reality. In retrospect, planning to take an RV into Chicago wasn't the best plan, but to try to do it on a weekend- and a holiday weekend on top of that- was just not smart. I found us a lot right outside of the Navy Pier, but parking was $27 IF we only took up one small spot. We'd likely need 2 because we are longer than a car. So, we drove through and headed out.
Plan B was to go to Starved Rock State Park and to see the sunflowers at Matthiessen State Park (right by Starved Rock). All entrances to the park were blocked because the parks were at capacity, but when we finally got in the sunflowers were closed for dove hunting.
So, if you do this trip and want to see the 60 acres of sunflowers, you need to go between July and August.
After failing to see anything I wanted to see in Illinois, we stopped for a coffee and pup cup from Dunkin' Donuts. So, here's a pic of that haha
What a bummer! I've driven through Chicago in a sports car in morning rush hour and was a WRECK by the time I got out of there! Can't imagine in an RV. Try the Biltmore House in mid summer (the entrance fee is ridiculous!) for fields of Sunflowers.
